Wossman rains threes to beat South Beauregard, win third consecutive state title

No. 2 South Beauregard’s 16-game win streak came to a screeching halt Saturday afternoon in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association nonselect Division II girls basketball state championship game at the University Center in Hammond.

No. 1 Wossman shot lights out in the first half to win 63-22 and claim its third consecutive state championship.

Wossman (29-4) made 6 of 9 three-pointers in the first quarter and shot 70.6 from the field in the first quarter. The Wildcats went on a 22-0 run to take over the game after an early 2-2 tie.

The Wildcats barely slowed their pace in the second quarter, adding four more three-pointers.

Wossman forced a running clock with 1:11 left in the second quarter.

Danaya Ross led three Wildcats in double-figures with 16 points, including four three-pointers. Ramiah Augurson added 14 points and Katreeka Mott-Frankl finished with 11 points.

While the Wildcats made 41.4 percent of their shots, the Lady K’s were limited to 19.1 percent (9 of 47) and turned the ball over 18 times.

South Beauregard was playing in its first state championship game since winning the Class 3A title in 2017.

Senior forward Kenzie Hudler led the Lady K’s (27-8) with eight points and five rebounds.
