Barbe’s Kennedi Burks sets 400 record at state indoor meet

Barbe’s Kennedi Burks had a record-setting, gold medal-winning Saturday at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state track and field championships at LSU’s Carl Maddox Field House.

Burks, who already owns the Class 5A 2023 outdoor 400-meter dash title, added the Division I 400 gold and dominated the field to set an LHSAA state meet and facility record.

She clocked in at 55.87 seconds, beating the old state meet record of 55.99 set by Tahja Mitchell (West Jefferson HS) in 2017. The former facility record (55.93) was set by Christie Fairley (George County, Miss.) in 2000. She beat runner-up Aaryona Kinchen (Brusly, 57.26) by 1.39 seconds.

Junior Hannah Boullion won the Division II 400 and helped St. Louis Catholic win the 4×200 relay to take second in Division II and four points behind champion Holy Savior Menard, 50-46.

Boullion, the 400 runner-up in 2023, checked in at 57.92 seconds to edge Lake Charles College Prep’s Jayla Mason (58.04) by .12 seconds.

Boullion along with Sophia Bergen Mia Medlin and Halee Jackson won the 4×200 in 1:47.57, while LCCP (Zion May, Akia Jackson, Ya’mani Allen, Mason) was second at 1:48.81.

LCCP won the 4×400 (Alaysia Reed, Jackson, Mason, Jayla King) in 4:06.69, beating St. Louis (4:09.97, Bergen, Christina Guidry, Jackson, Boullion) by more than three seconds.

\\The Lake Charles College Prep boys nearly won their first indoor track and field title, but the Trailblazers were disqualified in the final event. Their third place finish in the 4×400 relay would have given them enough points to overtake state champion Glen Oaks, who won 49-47.

LCCP won the 4×800 (William Plaster, Khel Arvie, Ajani Rhoden, Javerion Johnson) in 8:35.98.
