Undefeated champion, St. Louis’ Montet pins down second state wrestling title

St. Louis Catholic’s Graham Montet completed an undefeated season, and Sam Houston senior Tyson Roach’s dream of a three-peat fell short on Saturday at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association wrestling state championship meet in Bossier City.

Montet, a senior, won his second state championship in three seasons and finished 24-0 after he outpointed Archbishop Shaw’s James Nero (35-6), the No. 2 seed, in the Division III 190-pound final. Montet, the 2023 American Press All-Southwest Louisiana football defensive MVP, had little trouble in the first three matches, winning twice by pin, plus a 15-5 major decision over Episcopal’s Will York (20-9) in the semifinals.

Roach (73-5), who will wrestle for Arkansas-Little Rock next season, reached the final for a third consecutive year but lost to friend and nemesis Alex Rozas (51-1) of Teurlings Catholic 7-0 in the Division II 120-pound championship match. Two of Roach’s five losses this season were to Rozas. Roach won the 126 title last year and at 106 in Division I in 2022, while Rozas won at 106 in 2023.

Fellow Bronco Caleb Lavine (57-6) won his first title at 138 pounds, beating Teurlings Catholic’s Brennan Romero (44-18) 2-1 after winning his first three matches by pin. Romero was the 120 runner-up last year.

Roach and Lavine led Sam Houston to its best team finish ever, taking fifth in Division II with 161 points.

Basile’s Logan Bergeron (23-4) and South Beauregard’s Bryce Fontenot (35-6) won their first state championships.

Fontenot, a junior and top seed in Division III 144-pounds, won four consecutive matches by pin and took down No. 3 Seth Lowe (22-9) in the title match in just over 3 minutes. He was the 120-pound runner-up in 2022.

Bergeron, a freshman, took out Archbishop Shaw’s Kale Muscarello (39-12) with an 8-3 decision in the Division III 106 final.

After a runner-up finish last year and four consecutive state team titles from 2019 to 2022, Basile placed third with 197.5 points with 11 wrestlers placing sixth or better.

Besides Roach, other Southwest Louisiana runners-up included Basile’s Tucker Leblanc (150), Da’Shawn Randell (175) and Romyn Cortez (285) and St. Louis’ Grant Habetz (132) and Nolan McMichael (138).
