East Beauregard girls defend 4-1A championship

East Beauregard withstood some big surges from Hamilton Christian Tuesday to claim its second consecutive District 5-1A girls basketball championship.

The Trojans (18-11, 6-0) won 52-49 and haven’t lost a district game since Feb. 11, 2022.

Junior guard Lila Lewis led the Trojans with 18 points after scoring just one in the first half. Lewis also had seven rebounds and four steals. Sophia Burchard scored 16 points, and Kaelynn Kinchen added 11 points.

Hamilton (21-6, 4-1), who saw its 11-game win streak end, made its first big run in the opening quarter. The Warriors engineered a 9-0 run powered by offensive boards to break a 3-3. Hamilton had six offensive rebounds in the opening quarter. Kay Dantley scored on a putback for a 5-3 lead, and Riley Fontenot’s offensive board and bucket pushed the lead to 12-3.

East Beauregard responded with a 14-0 run in the second quarter and led 24-20 at halftime.

Hamilton came out of the break with some big energy as Mckenzie Deville scored on a fastbreak and back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Warriors up 28-24. Hamilton had four threes in the third quarter, but the Trojans headed into the fourth with a 44-36 lead after an 8-0 run.

Deville scored a game-high 20 points, and Destiny Ware added 14.

The Warriors out rebounded the Trojans 30-21 but struggled with foul trouble in a physical game. Four of their five starters had at least four fouls, and two fouled out.
