There will be a Lake Charles connection on LSU’s revamped football coaching staff.

Former Barbe High and McNeese State quarterback Slade Nagle will join Brian Kelly’s staff as tight ends and special teams coach.

Nagle spent the last eight years at Tulane, first as tight ends coach before being to promoted to offensive coordinator last season. He was also the Green Wave’s interim head coach for the Military Bowl in December after Willie Fritz left to take the head coaching job at Houston.

“Slade brings a winning and experienced résumé to our staff,” Kelly said in a statement released by the school. “Whether calling plays or coaching tight ends, quarterbacks or special teams, Slade has excelled at all levels.

“A native of Louisiana, he has a great recruiting knowledge of the state and is known for developing his position group. We’re excited about Slade becoming a member of our staff.”

Nagle’s hiring should complete an overhaul of Kelly’s staff that will include six new assistants.

Nagle reportedly interviewed for the Tigers’ offensive coordinator spot, which Kelly filled from within by elevating quarterbacks coach Joe Sloan and wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton to share the position.

The opening for Nagle came when previous offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, who also coached tight ends, left LSU for Notre Dame on Dec. 23.

Nagle will be the lone newcomer on the offensive staff. But defensively, LSU will have a new coordinator in Blake Baker, edge rusher coach in Kevin Peoples and safeties coach in Jake Olson (all three coming from Missouri), along with two former Tigers coming home, cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond (Florida) and defensive line coach Bo Davis (Texas A&M).

As a player, Nagle was an all-state quarterback at Barbe then spent a year at Clemson before returning to Lake Charles to play for McNeese from1999-2001. He quarterbacked the Cowboys to the Southland Conference championship in his final season.

Since then he’s built a diverse coaching résumé that has included stops at Dodge City (Kan.) Community College, Northwestern State, Texas State, Central Arkansas and back to McNeese before going to Tulane in 2016 as part of Fritz’s original staff that revitalized the Green Wave. He also had a previous stint at LSU as a special teams analyst under Les Miles during the 2009 season.

Nagle is the son of longtime former McNeese assistant coach Johnny Nagle, who played defensive back for LSU from 1969-71.
