Marie Antoinette Benton Young, 99, took flight into the Divine light surrounded by loved ones at home on Monday morning, Jan. 8, 2024, in Shallowater, Texas.

She was born in Beasley, Texas, but lived in Sulphur, La., with her husband, JC, for over 70 years of her life.  During the last two years of her life she decided to move to Lubbock, Texas, to be close to her granddaughter and grandson-in-law, where she became the bright, shining light of her assisted living community.  Her dream was to become a movie star, and she certainly captured a worldwide audience as Magnificent MawMaw Marie, with her inspiring smile, sparkling blue eyes, love of nature and occasional song and dance. She enjoyed playing dominoes, spending time at the family farm, gardening, and listening to music. Marie was a member of Maplewood First Baptist Church in Sulphur, where she taught second grade Sunday school for over 30 years. She was a cherished family member, a devoted grandmother, a dear friend, a friendly neighbor and a wise mentor. Marie made a significant impact in the many lives she touched and created ripple effects of joy to the world.

Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Grindol of Sneedville, Tenn.; her granddaughter, Tamberly Conway and husband, Warren, of Shallowater, Texas; her brother, Billy Boy Benton of Needville, Texas, and her beloved four-legged companion, Buddy Boy. She is preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Young; her parents, Frank and Ada Hartfield Benton; her siblings, Peggy Wittneben, Guy Benton, and Frank Benton Jr.; and her grandson, Jeremy Kerr.
