Kelly fires four coaches, moves to overhaul defense

The House-cleaning for LSU’s historical defensive struggles came Wednesday.

Head coach Brian Kelly fired defensive coordinator Matt House and three other assistant coaches two days after the Tigers (10-3) finished the season with a 35-31 victory over Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

It was a fitting end to the season as LSU’s high-powered offense rallied the Tigers while Wisconsin rolled up the Badgers’ season-high with 506 total yards.

So Kelly, who’d said he wanted to wait until after the bowl game to make staff changes, announced he was parting ways with House, along with safeties coach Kerry Cooks, cornerbacks coach Robert Steeples and defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey.

Kelly said in a statement released by LSU that he informed the coaches Wednesday morning of his decision and thanked them for their time.

“Decisions like these are always difficult and we do not take them lightly,” Kelly said. “But they are made with the best interests of our program and our student-athletes in mind.

“Moving forward we will continue working to build a championship-caliber coaching staff in support of our mission to graduate champions.”

Lindsey did not coach during the season as he was forced to take a medical leave not long before preseason practices began. He returned in November but did not resume on-field coaching.

Lindsey’s absence forced a reshuffling of the defensive staff just before practice began.

John Jancek, who moved from outside linebackers coach/special teams coordinator to take over the defensive line from Lindsey, will be retained in some capacity, according to a report by On3 Sports. It likely won’t be with the defensive line, however, as he had little experience coaching there before forced into it last August.

Janacek, a former defensive coordinator at Georgia and Tennessee, originally went to LSU as a defensive analyst.

Bob Diaco, a former defensive coordinator under Kelly at Notre Dame, was an LSU defensive analyst before the August staff reshuffling. He moved to the field to replace Janacek as outside linebackers coach. His future role is not clear but Kelly did not mention him among those let go.

Kelly did not give a time table for getting replacement coaches on board.

But they’ll have the task of fixing what was statistically the worst defense in LSU history.

It came to head at Ole Miss, when the Tigers allowed 706 yards in a 55-49 loss, but that was one of five games in which the Tigers allowed 490 or more yards.

Nationally, among 130 Football Bowl Subdivision teams, the Tigers ranked 105th in total defense (416 ypg), 115th in passing defense (255.6 ypg), 85th in rushing defense and 114th in third-down conversions defense (44.8 percent).
