Matherne steps down at St. Louis

The dust has barely settled from the 2023 high school football season, but the area coaching carousel is already whirling.
St. Louis Catholic released a statement on Monday that Brock Matherne has stepped down as head coach after a successful three-year run.
“We are grateful for Coach Matherne for the success he’s brought to our football program,” St. Louis Athletic Director Pat Neck said in the statement. “We will miss him as part of our school community but wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.”
Matherne, who played at Belle Chasse High School, said he would stay in the coaching profession, but his landing spot was not finalized.
“I love St. Louis Catholic, and I always will,” Matherne said. “They gave me my first opportunity to be a head coach. It was a great three years, and I am forever grateful for this place.”
“It was not with St. Louis or the area,” he said about his reason for leaving. “It got to a point with my family and getting closer to my wife’s and my family. After this football season we looked at it and felt like we needed to do it.
“We love Lake Charles. It is one of those things that I have to do what is best for my family. This was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up. I said no to a lot of people the last few years.”
Matherne went 21-13 in three seasons with regional-round appearances in 2022 and 2023. His best season was in 2022 when the Saints went 9-3 and lost a defensive battle to Madison Prep 6-0 in the Select Division II regionals.
“We had some great memories,” he said. “It is something that should stick around this area for a long time. It is a bittersweet moment, and it has been a very emotional day.”
