Sulphur sweeps St. Louis Catholic in doubleheader

Sulphur swept St. Louis Catholic in a pair of defensive battles on Tuesday at McNeese State’s Legacy Center.

The Sulphur Tors (4-0) never trailed in a 35-28 win but the Saints (0-1) kept them out of their normal game plan as they slowed the Tors’ inside game of J.D. Lafleur and West Navarre.

The Tors led by as many as nine points in the third quarter, but the Saints rallied late to cut it to a two-possession game twice.

With 2:26 left, Christian Guillory drove the right side of the lane and laid it in to cut the Tors’ lead to 30-26. With just over a minute left the Tors’ lead dropped to 32-28 on a shot by Alex Goodwin.

The key bucket for the Tors came with 1:34 left when Mason Bowser zipped a pass to the left post to Navarre as he slipped behind a defender to put the Tors up 32-26. The Tors went 3 for 4 from the free throw line in the final 20 seconds, including a pair from Mason Bowser

Both teams struggled to score with no field goal until 2:14 left in the opening quarter on a jumper by Navarre for a 3-0 lead.

The Saints scored a single point in the first quarter and didn’t hit a shot till 6:50 in the second quarter on Alex Goodwin’s fastbreak layup.

The teams combined for 17 turnovers in the first half.

Bowser and Navarre led the Tors with eight points each.

Goodwin topped the Saints with seven points.

Sulphur battled for a 13-6 lead in the first quarter as Presley Gunter blocked three shots and Reese Martin scored five of her 17 game-high points.

St. Louis tied the game at 2-2 on a bucket off an offensive board by Delaynie Williams but the Saints never took the lead.

The pace of the game slowed in the second quarter as the teams combined for six points.

Sulphur pushed its lead to22-8 midway through the third quarter, but the Saints drilled three long balls to get back into the game as Sonny Woodcock and Bayleigh Vincent hit back-to-back 3-pointers. Vincent added another with 1:29 left in the third to cut the Tors lead to 24-17.

The Saints got within six, 28-22, with 6:32 left on a fastbreak and and-one foul shot by Emma Gregory.

Sulphur outscored St. Louis 11-4 in the final six minutes.
