As we gather once again in the spirit of Thanksgiving, it is with hearts full of gratitude that we come together, not just as Native Americans but as fellow citizens of this great and diverse nation. In the tapestry of American history, the threads of Native American stories intertwine with the myriad of narratives that collectively form the rich and unique fabric of our country.

This annual tradition, now in its sixth year, has become a humble reflection on the shared journey of resilience and progress that defines our collective story. In the spirit of unity and thankfulness, we extend our gratitude for the countless blessings bestowed upon all Americans, regardless of the origins of our diverse backgrounds.

Within the mosaic of American history, the sovereign tribal nations stand as pillars of strength and resilience. Today, 574 federally recognized tribes contribute to the vibrant narrative of our nation, each with its distinctive story of endurance and triumph.

We honor the indigenous citizens whose histories are deeply entwined with the very soil beneath our feet, reflecting a spirit that transcends time. Their history, woven into the history of this nation, is a testament to the enduring spirit that unites us all. In the face of challenges, the journey of progress continues, reminding us of the words of my late father, Ernest Sickey, who wisely said, “The struggles have made us stronger.”

This year marks a significant milestone for the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of our re-recognition. It is a testament to the resilience and determination that define our journey, a journey that reflects the broader story of progress in our great nation.

In this season of gratitude, we extend our thanks for the abundant blessings bestowed upon all Americans. As we gather around our tables, let us not only celebrate the unique stories of Native Americans but also embrace the collective history that makes our nation exceptional.

In the spirit of unity and thanksgiving, let us reflect on the enduring words of our Heavenly Father, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (ESV)

May these words resonate in our hearts as we gather around our tables, embracing the common humanity that unites us all. In the spirit of gratitude, let us look to the future with hope and a shared commitment toward a better tomorrow.

Aliilamo (thank you), and Happy Thanksgiving to all.

David Sickey is former Chairman of the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana.
