Just rewards, Bucs’ LaSalle Class 5A MVP

A pair of perennial state high school powers, Barbe baseball and St. Amant softball, claimed state championships again this season with the help of standouts Donovan LaSalle and Addison Jackson, who rose to the occasion on the biggest stage.

LaSalle hit a go-ahead home run in Barbe’s championship game win to cap a stellar season, while Jackson allowed one run over St. Amant’s two championship tournament games to help the Gators win a second consecutive title.

For that, LaSalle and Jackson are MVPs of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 5A All-State teams.

LaSalle hit .510 with 10 home runs, 43 runs batted in, 57 runs scored and 33 stolen bases. The final homer was a grand slam in a nine-run seventh inning that gave Barbe a 10-4 win over West Monroe in the non-select Division I championship game.

Barbe pitcher Landon Victorian joins LaSalle on the first team after going 8-0 with a 0.98 ERA. Sulphur’s Jake Brown (10-2, 1.71 ERA; .336, 7 HR) and Sam Houston’s Sam Ardoin (.391, 7 HR, 34 RBIs, 41 runs) were first-team selections after helping their teams reach the semifinals.

Jackson went 32-2 as a pitcher with a 0.93 ERA, striking out 288. Jackson hit .521 with 28 home runs and 75 RBIs.

Sam Houston has a pair of repeat first-team selections in pitcher Lexi Dibbley and infielder Brylie Fontenot. Dibbley starred in the circle and at the plate for the Broncos, who finished as state runner-up in non-select Division I. In the circle, Dibbley was 25-3 with a 1.84 ERA and 172 strikeouts. She hit .553 with 18 home runs and 59 RBIs.

Fontenot, a shortstop, hit .393 with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs. Both Dibbley and Fontenot signed to play at McNeese State.

Baseball Coach of the Year is Jesuit’s Kenny Goodlet, who led the Blue Jays to the select schools Division I title. Jesuit finished 31-7, capping an undefeated playoff run with a 1-0 win over Archbishop Rummel in the championship game.

Katie Prescott of Live Oak is the softball Coach of the Year after guiding the Eagles to the semifinals of the non-select Division I playoffs. Live Oak finished 31-5, a 10-win improvement over last season. The Eagles outscored their first two playoff opponents 25-4 before losing to Sam Houston at the state tournament.
