An 18-year-old Lake Charles man wanted in the fatal shooting of a recent LaGrange High School graduate surrendered to authorities in Lafayette Friday morning and has been transported back to Southwest Louisiana.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Kayla Vincent said violent crimes detectives, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service, located Demontoriyuana E. Charles after he agreed to surrender. He was arrested and transported to the Calcasieu Correctional Center.

Vincent said he has been charged with second-degree murder, aggravated criminal damage to property and illegal use of a weapon. His bond is set at $680,000.

Vincent said deputies were dispatched to Huber Park in the 2400 block of 4th Avenue at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in reference to shots fired. She said the person who alerted deputies of the shooting heard several shots fired and saw a white car fleeing the area.

Deputies discovered 18-year-old Markell B. Jackson — who graduated from LaGrange four days earlier — in the street near the park when they arrived. He was transported to a local hospital with a gunshot wound and died of his injuries.

Vincent said surveillance footage in the area where the shooting occurred led them to Charles. She said the investigation is continuing and more arrests are likely.
