CHAMPIONSHIP ROUNDUP: Berwick wins nonselect Div. III in 8 innings over Doyle

The third time wasn’t the charm for No. 3 Doyle.

No. 5 Berwick (21-14) claimed its third state championship 4-2 in eight innings thanks to a clutch home run by Jayden Milton to win the nonselect Division III title at McMurry Park in Sulphur.

Doyle lost for the third consecutive season in a state championship game.

With two outs in the top of the eighth inning, Milton crushed a two-run home run over the left field wall for the lead. Dathan Cummings hit a single with one out in the bottom of the inning inning but Doyle’s (27-9) Dawson Richard, the game MVP, struck out the final two batters to end the game. Richard struck out 12 and walked three.

Caiden Barcia hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 6-6. On the mound, Barcia struck out 10 batters in six innings.

Division V

Lincoln Stevens drove in four runs to lead Pitkin to an 8-4 win over Anacoco in the nonselect Division V state championship game Friday at the high school baseball tournament at McMurry Park.

Stevens had a two-run single in the first to cap a four-run Tigers (20-6) outburst. Anacoco (23-12) scored two each in the second and third innings to knot the score at 4-4, but Pitkin scored four more in the fourth inning to take control. Stevens again capped the rally, hitting a two-out, two-run single. He was named the game’s Most Outstanding Player. John Davis earned the win.

Reid Rodriguez had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run to lead Anacoco.

Brandon Kragle struck out eight in six innings to lead the Comets to a second consecutive state championship.

St. Charles Catholic (30-6) took the lead for good with two runs in the second inning on a two-out single by Ayden Authement to score Brady St. Pierre and Austin Catalano. The Comets broke the game open with six runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Brady St. Pierre.

Coen Laroux had two hits and an RBI for Menard (26-8).

Division IV

Ouachita Christian. . . . 8

Ascension Catholic. . . . 0

Karson Trichel and Landon Graves combined on a one-hitter to lead the Eagles.

Owen Hudnall had two hits and drove in three runs to lead the OCS (24-8) offense, which blew the game open with a five-run fifth inning. The big inning stretched gave the Eagles a 6-0 lead. Graves also had two hits. Trichel struck out four in six innings of work and added an RBI single.

Bryce Leonard had the lone hit for Ascension Catholic (25-8).

Division V

Avoyelles Charter. . . . . 3

Family Community. . . . 0

Connor Mayeaux struck out six in five innings of work while Mason Bordelon struck out four batters to earn the save for the Vikings (26-3).

Bordelon also had a double at the plate for Avoyelles Public Charter, which scored all of its runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Jean-Pierre Bordelon. Raylee Thomas pitched a complete game for Family Community (14-12). Rusty Phillips had two hits for the Warriors.
