W. Monroe stops Sam Houston, rallies with three-run seventh

SULPHUR — It was déjà vu for the fourth-seeded Sam Houston Broncos on Thursday at the state baseball tournament.

Just like the final game of their quarterfinal series last year against West Monroe, the Broncos owned a late lead, but the No. 1 Rebels found a way to rally again and win 4-3 in the nonselect Division I semifinals at McMurry Park.

Last season the Rebels scored one in the top of the seventh to end the Broncos’ season. This time, West Monroe scored three in the bottom of the seventh to erase a 3-1 deficit.

West Monroe (34- 5) loaded the bases with no outs on two singles and a walk.

Hayden Federico was hit by a pitch to bring home a run, and Trey Hawsey hit a fly ball that got hung up in the wind and dropped in for a single to bring home the tying run.

John Pearson hit a line drive through the right side to plate Garrett Frye for the winning run.

“They just played better than us late,” Sam Houston head coach Chad Hebert said. “It is what it is.

“I think these kids have played their hearts out. This is a tribute to this senior class. They left a mark on this program. I am going to keep saying, we are going to keep beating on the door until we finally knock it down.”

Sam Houston (31-5) struck early when Garrett Courvelle hit a grounder to right field to bring home Jaxson Landreneau in the top of the second inning. The Broncos added two more in the fourth inning on Dylan Bell’s sacrifice fly and a single by Sam Ardoin. Sam Houston had two baserunners over the final three innings.

Sam Houston starter Cole Flanagan and reliever Nik Toups held the Rebels scoreless until the sixth inning when Hawsey hit an RBI double with one out.

Andrew Ferguson earned the win in relief for the Rebels after throwing 3 1/3 scoreless innings.

West Monroe, the defending state champion, will play No. 2 Barbe in the championship game at 5 p.m. Saturday.
