Derrick Cherry rand Ty Abraham combined Saturday to throw the sixth no-hitter in McNeese State history.

The duo blanked Prairie View for eight innings as the Cowboys won 10-0 in a game shortened by the run rule.

Braley Hollins ended the contest with a walk-off home run that either did or did not leave the stadium in left-center field.

Hollins’ shot came with a runner on and two out, and the Cowboys leading 8-0. His blast appeared to hit the back wall and bounce back, but the umpires ruled it in play.

However, Hollins kept running for an inside-out, inside-the-park homer, his first of the year.

It was a strange way to end McNeese’s ninth win in 11 games as the Cowboys improved to 10-5.

“We are playing some solid ball right now,” said shortstop Josh Leslie, who had three hits and drove in four runs to lead McNeese.

Leslie tops the club with 18 RBIs and raised his average to .349.

“Good to see the guys get some hits with runners on base,” said Leslie.

His two-run double was key in a four-run fourth that gave McNeese a 6-0 lead.

As for the pitching, that was again tops for McNeese. For the second straight weekend the Cowboys opened a series with back-to-back shutouts.

Cherry had his second solid start, this time throwing six innings of no-hit baseball as the Panthers fell to 2-14 on the year. They have just two hits in the first two games of the series.

“I was thinking about it,” Cherry admitted about the no-hitter. “The defense did great and backed me up. I feel like I have gotten into a groove.”

The improving Cherry struck out seven and walked just one while improving to 2-0 on the season. Keanu Maldonado was the only Panther to reach against him, walking to lead off the sixth only to be wiped out a batter later on a double play.

Ty Abraham threw the final two innings, striking out three.

Cooper Hext, singled, doubled and homered for the Cowboys, who collected 11 hits in all. Hext hit the first pitch of the game from PV starter Michael Dews over the fence in left and McNeese was off and running.

McNeese will go for the series sweep today at 1 p.m. with Zach Voss expected to get the start.
