Paris Guillory set a state championship tournament single-game scoring record to lead St. Louis Catholic to a 61-51 win over Vandebilit Catholic in a select Division II semifinal game Wednesday at the girls state basketball tournament in Hammond.

Guillory scored 41 points to set the record for most points scored in a Class 3A/Division II state tournament game. The previous record was 35 points by LSU head coach Kim Mulkey, who played at Hammond High. Mulkey set the record in a 1980 semifinal win over Caldwell Parish.

The Saints (27-6) trailed the entire first half before going on a 23-0 second-half run to take the lead for good. Vanderbilt Catholic (21-3) scored the first four points of the second half to extend its lead to 32-24, but didn’t score in the final 6 minutes of the quarter. St. Louis scored the final 15 points of the quarter, taking the lead for good on a basket by Guillory to make it 34-32.

The lead grew to seven points by the end of the quarter. St. Louis scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to stretch the lead to 47-32 on a basket by Guillory.

“Our defense was tremendous in the second half; we held them to four points in the third quarter,” St. Louis head coach Tony Johnson said. “On offense, we spread things out a little more. We were able to hit some shots and that opened some lanes up.”

The Terriers rallied in the final 3 minutes, going on a 10-1 run to get within 56-51 with 27 seconds left in the game. Vanderbilt Catholic was called for a personal foul and technical foul on the same play with 11 seconds left. Guillory made two free throws to put the game out of reach.

“The big thing she was able to do was get to the free throw line,” Johnson said. “She was able to get others involved as well. We went to a different defense in the second half and Paris was the head of that too.”

She scored all nine St. Louis points in the first quarter, but the Terrier tandem of Makayla Chalres and Maddie Dufrene combined for 12 points as Vandebilt Catholic built a 16-9 lead.

Guillory scored 17 points in the decisive second half run and finished with 20 rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks. She scored or assisted 14 of 16 Saints field goals and went 18 of 22 from the free throw line.

Charles led Vandebilt Catholic with 25 points, 11 rebounds and six steals.

St. Louis will play the winner of today’s game between No. 1 Lafayette Christian and No. 4 Peabody in the championship game at 2 p.m. Saturday. It will be the fifth consecutive season that St. Louis has reached the championship game. The Saints have won the last two Division II titles.
