Marcy Lee Creed Perkins, the only child of Lee Roy and Hettie Bailey Creed, passed away peacefully in Lake Charles, La., on Feb. 20, 2023, at the age of 85.
Marcy was born in Dayton, Texas, on May 31, 1937. After a childhood centered around her parents’ variety stores in Houston, Texas, she attended Jefferson Davis High School. She served as an ROTC sponsor and ultimately graduated with honors. She attended Baylor University and the University of Houston and received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education degree. Marcy considered teaching children, both her own boys and her school children, to be the joyful mission of her life.
Marcy married Carl Rodney Perkins Jr. in 1958. From 1958 to 1963 she taught 1st and 2nd grade, moving from Washington State to Harlingen, Texas to Fairbanks, Alaska, as required by Carl’s Air Force postings. After Carl left the Air Force in 1966, the family settled down in Lake Charles. For the next 10 years she enjoyed watching her two sons, Carl and Bennett, learn and grow.
The next chapter of her life saw her resume her career in education. She spent the next 18 years teaching kindergarten students at the University United Methodist Day School and Immaculate Conception Cathedral School (ICCS). She spent two additional years at ICCS as their Development Director and enjoyed playing a major part in the assembling of the first network of computers in that school.
While teaching, Marcy wrote two children’s stories, The Happy Hive and Buster Bat, which she published after her retirement. This experience, along with her long-standing hobby of photography, led to a new career. In 2002 she agreed to do the graphic design of a book written by Nola Mae Ross. During the next 11 years she continued her graphic design work with Ms. Ross on 10 more books including The Devastation of Hurricane Rita and Cameron Pioneers.
Marcy was a member of University United Methodist Church for many years, where she held many volunteer positions in addition to teaching at its day school. More recently, she was an active member of St. Luke-Simpson United Methodist Church.
Marcy leaves behind her loving husband of 64 years, Carl Rodney Perkins Jr.; son, Carl Allen Perkins of Houston, Texas; son, Bennett Lee Perkins; daughter-in-law, Linda Wise Perkins; and granddaughter, Jenna Wise of Houston, Texas; cousins, nieces and nephews of her extended family; and many good friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Hixson Funeral Home of Lake Charles on Friday, March 3, 2023, at 11 a.m. followed by a gathering of family and friends in the funeral home until 1:30 p.m.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy for the Perkins family may be shared at www.hixsonfuneralhomes.com.
