LSU wins opener in style, Skenes tosses shutout

LSU’s much-anticipated baseball season opener Friday came as advertised — but with one frightening asterisk.

The consensus No. 1-ranked Tigers opened the year with a 10-0 victory over Western Michigan that featured a dominant pitching performance from transfer Paul Skenes (1-0) and hitting up and down the lineup from veterans and newcomers alike.

But one of the highly touted transfers gave the opening day crowd a scare when Pau White, who set an NCAA freshman record with 27 home runs at North Carolina State last year, left the game writhing in pain in the first inning after diving back into first base on a pickoff attempt.

“I don’t think it was as bad as maybe it looked,” second-year LSU head coach Jay Johnson said. “I don’t think he will play (Saturday) (but) probably as positive as it could be. But I don’t know everything. It was the shoulder.

“We just had to pop his shoulder back into place.”

Johnson said White suffered a similar injury last season and missed one week.

White’s injury was about the only drama in the opener after LSU scored three runs in the first two innings and three Tigers’ pitchers never let the Broncos (0-1) threaten.

Skenes (1-0), the transfer from Air Force, struck out 12 in six innings while allowing three hits.

“He showed why he’s the best pitcher in college baseball,” Johnson said. “He is very detailed in his approach, and he executed his plan precisely.”

Christian Little, a transfer from Vanderbilt, pitched two hitless innings with three strikeouts and freshman Michah Bucknam pitched the ninth.

LSU (1-0) finished with 10 hits, although Western Michigan starter Brady Miller (0-1) overcame his rocky start to hold the Tigers down until breaking the game open with five runs in the sixth for a 8-0 lead.

All-American center fielder Dylan Crews went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, the lone Tiger with multiple hits.

Designated hitter Jarred Jones and second baseman Ben Nippolt each had a pair of RBIs.
