Cecile Janet Austin, 70, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Dec. 31, 2022, at her home in Beaumont, Texas. Janet was born on Dec. 12, 1952, in Lake Charles, and lived primarily there and in Sweet Lake until 2020. She graduated from Lake Charles High School in 1970. While earning her dual-degree at McNeese University (Class of 1982), she was President of the Student Body, on the Dean’s List and a member of Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. She was bilingual in English and Spanish.
Janet is survived by her sister, Mary Edwards Pace (Chriss) of Lake Charles; her son, Jason Smith (Karen); daughter, Jennifer Austin and son Andrew Richard, all of Houston, Texas; her five grandchildren and three great grandchildren; as well as her nephews, niece and great nephews and niece.
Janet was pre-deceased by her mother, Hazel Tarver Austin; father, Cecil Joyner Austin; half-brother, Charlie Austin; and niece, Renee Willis.
Janet was known and loved by many as the site administrator for several Lake Charles historical Facebook pages. She was an avid reader, loved movies and spent weekends for many years at Rutherford Beach. She loved animals (especially her many Yorkies), decorating for the holidays and spending time with her beloved friends and family. She has friends across the country and around the world from her many online groups.
A memorial service will be held at J.E. Hixson and Sons Funeral Home in Lake Charles on Friday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. with visitation prior starting at 12:30 p.m. The family invites all guests to stay for a reception immediately after the service at the funeral home.
