Starting QB in limbo, Kadum could be game-time decision

Knox Kadum’s status is unclear. That seems to be the easy part.

Who plays quarterback if Kadum doesn’t go for the Cowboys Saturday night is even more cloudy.

Nursing an injured shoulder, McNeese State head coach Gary Goff said Kadum has been limited in practice this week. He will likely be a game-time decision.

“We will have to see how he is at the end of the week,” Goff said Thursday.

Ryan Roberts, a redshirt freshman from Lafayette Christian, is listed as the backup. He played late in last week’s loss to Nicholls State after Kadum was injured.

“If it is not Knox, Ryan Roberts has been taking snaps, Cam McCalister has been taking snaps,” Goff said. “We have had a lot of different people taking snaps behind center.”

That includes senior transfer Walker Wood, who has been a receiver the last two seasons.

“We will have a game plan for each,” Goff said.

The Cowboys (1-6, 0-3 SLC) host preseason Southland Conference-favorite Southeastern Louisiana (4-3, 1-1) at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Goff has been forced to play a lot of folks of late and more are expected to see time this weekend. Injuries and a few dismissals have left the short-handed Cowboys even shorter on the depth chart.

“We will get to see what a lot of these guys can do,” Goff said. “We are excited to see them in action.”

Safety Enos Lewis, also hurt against Nicholls, has been ruled out. Goff said he hopes Lewis can return for the final two of the Cowboys’ four remaining games, three of them at home.

“Lewis has worked hard this year so it would be nice for him to get a chance to play again,” Goff said.

Darius Shields, who went in for Lewis at Nicholls and recorded eight tackles, will get his first start. Last week was the redshirt sophomore from Houston’s first action in his Cowboys career.

Goff said injured running back D’Angelo Durham is officially out for the season. Durham hurt his leg injured in the third game of the season against Alcorn State on Sept. 17.

He played the next week against Mississippi College, rushing for 157 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries before needing surgery. Goff said McNeese will appeal to the NCAA for a medical redshirt so Durham can return next season.

The Cowboys will try to break a three-game losing streak, their second of the season, as the try to win their first game against a Division I opponent.

“I do feel we are close,” Goff said. “We have to play four full quarters if we are to have a chance.”
