Bargain hunters and collectors will be hitting the road this weekend for the 6th annual Allen Parish Flea Market Trail.

The two-day event will be held 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 22 across the parish. Admission is free.

Shoppers can browse more than 50 garage sales, flea markets and craft booths stretching along U.S.190 between Kinder and Reeves, U.S. 165 between Oberlin and Oakdale, La. 26 from Kinder to Mittie, and La. 10 to Elizabeth.

More than a dozen special “hot spots,” featuring five or more vendors will be located at the Reeves Snack Shack on U.S. 190, Junkers in Kinder, the Allen Parish Cultural Center just north of Kinder, Veterans Memorial Park in Oberlin, the American Legion Hall in Oberlin, the Catholic Church in Oakdale, the Pentecostal Church in Mittie and a location in Elizabeth.

Individuals, families and groups will also set up in yards along the route.

“The Re-Thunk Junk Flea Market Trail encompasses all of Allen Parish with every town participating,’” Allen Parish Tourism Commission Director Adagria Haddock said. “Many vendors set up throughout the parish in designated spots while others set up in their yards along the highway.”

Bargain hunters, junk collectors and treasure seekers can expect to find just about anything along the trail, Haddock said. Items will include driftwood and other wooden crafts, furniture, lamps, tie-dye crafts, books, toys, tools, jewelry, clothing and accessories, knick-knacks, household goods, homemade jellies and preserves, sweet cakes, popcorn, cracklins and more.

Food booths will be set up in Oberlin and Kinder selling barbecue burgers, chicken and pork steaks.

“It’s just a fun-filled junkapalooza,” Haddock said. “People look forward to it every year.”

Haddock said the event helps the local economy and brings people to the parish.

“We encourage everyone to get off the trail and visit our local restaurants, convenience stores and other businesses,” she said.

The St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 112 S. 7th Street, in Oberlin will also be holding its annual church bazaar during the weekend.

Vendor space for the Re-Thunk Junk is free to anyone, but vendors must register with the tourist commission.
