“Love Your Selfie” — immersive, interactive, Instagrammable pop-up studios

Published 12:43 pm Friday, August 26, 2022

Imagine visiting the perfect studio to take the perfect selfie or photos of friends and family. Now, imagine visiting multiple studio “sets,” all under one roof and being able to strike a pose in all of them and have fun doing it. Don’t expect “still life,” at the ol’ museum. There are plenty of moving parts to make everything fun for all ages.

That’s the premise behind the Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center “Love Your Selfie” event. With the help of the Arts and Humanities Council of SWLA, this interactive, immersive and instagrammable  experience will be “brought to life,” on Friday, August 26 at Historic City Hall.

Artists involved are Angelle Marcantel Boyette, Maggie Bradshaw, Mary Donaldson, Kat Godsey, Anna LeBlanc, Ashley Gates, Julie Groth, Brook Hanemann, Sean Hager, Sadie Lambert, Tracy Lemieux, Amy Nyberg, and Ashley Royer.

When the idea of having an entire gallery space of interactive studios came into existence, Matt Young, Director of Cultural Affairs, knew he needed local talent to bring the vision to life. The curated studios will encourage guests to be immersed in the space and of course…pose for a selfie!

“While we can’t reveal all of the studio themes, we can tell you to expect pops of color, texture and lights,” Young said.

The American Press coerced one artist into spilling a bean or two. Sadie Lambert hinted at a very vintage backdrop, but she wouldn’t say more.

Amanda Donaldson, Historic City Hall creative specialist, revealed that one studio creator in particular wants a guest to come and “add an element,” but wouldn’t go into detail.

She hinted at out-of-the-box creativity.

“The artists had great fun arranging these “studios.” Some of them met for the first time. Some don’t consider themselves as artists.”

“Love Your Selfie” will be on view at Historic City Hall, 1001 Ryan St., through Oct. 31. Business hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free.
