Former Barbe and McNeese State player Brooke David will take the reins of the Sulphur High School softball program.

“I am excited about it,” David said. “I think Sulphur has some really good softball roots.

“I am excited to come in and bring some fresh, new energy. I just like to compete hard. I like to have fun, bring the energy and keep the energy up. For the most part, it is just competing and grinding out there and be gritty.”

SHS principal David Pool confirmed the hiring of David Monday afternoon.

David will follow in the footsteps of another Barbe grad, former head coach Julie Mancuso, who won three state championships in 29 seasons at Sulphur. Mancuso won 600 games in her career.

“It is, honestly, an honor,” David said. “I am following in some great footsteps.

“It is really exciting of what she has already built and me just coming in there and build it even more. It is really awesome to be able to follow behind her.”

David spent the last four seasons as head coach at Jennings. She guided the Bulldogs to their first winning season in more than eight years in 2021 and playoff appearances in 2021 and 2022. She graduated from Barbe in 2011 where she was a Class 5A all-state first team selection as a senior. She played two seasons at Jones County Junior College and one at McNeese in 2015.
