The gym at Sacred Heart Catholic Church has been labeled beyond “reasonable repair” and will be demolished.

The Rev. Ruben Buller, vicar general and moderator of the Curia for the Diocese of Lake Charles, said Sacred Heart sustained significant damage during Hurricanes Laura and Delta and remediation work began quickly in an effort to minimize further damage.

“The roofs of the church, convent, offices, library and school building were replaced,” he said. “The Diocese is working to enter a contract for repairs to the interior of the church, and it is expected that these repairs will begin soon.”

But some buildings are beyond repair.

“Unfortunately, the old gym is beyond reasonable repair and will be demolished,” Buller said. “The old rectory, which was in poor repair before the storms, suffered damages rendering it beyond repair. It, too, will be demolished.”

Advertisement for the demolition projects and repairs will begin soon, Buller said, while the remaining buildings are still being evaluated according to Federal Emergency Management Agency-related processes. Further action cannot be taken until these evaluations are received.
