Surrounded by loved ones, Alton Guidry Sr., passed away peacefully at his home in Lake Charles, La., on June 7, 2022, at the age of 87.
Born Sept. 19, 1934, to Allen Guidry and Mary Malbrough Guidry in Rayne, La. Alton was the oldest of six. During his childhood, “Zal” as he was affectionately called, moved to Lake Charles, La., with his family. He was a life long member of Greater Live Oak Baptist Church where he served as both Deacon and Usher.
After graduating from Washington High School, Alton served in the U.S. Army. He was later employed by the U.S. Postal Service where he retired after 40 years. As a mail carrier, Alton was given the name “Smiley” because of his infectious smile and the joy it brought to each and everyone on his route. After enjoying his retirement for a little while, Alton decided to get back into the workforce, working as a security guard at PPG Industries for 10 years. There he also provided that million dollar smile.
Alton was a loving man who enjoyed spending time with all of his family and dear friends. He was a lover of all things music and even learned to play a few tunes on the guitar. During his leisure time “Zal” enjoyed keeping his yard finely manicured, watching sports, playing Pitty Pat with the family and going to the casino or “the front” as he called it.
Alton leaves to cherish all the wonderful memories, his devoted wife of 57 years, Rose Johnson Guidry; his children, Mary Guidry (Jerome) Ringo, Paula (Martin) Stevens, Alton Guidry Jr., Kevin (Michelle) Guidry, Derrick (Paul) Guidry, Doris Guidry and Dana (Eddie) Lewis, all of Lake Charles; two bonus children, Darryl Johnson of Houston, Texas, and Evelyn (Leroy) Winbush of Killeen, Texas; his siblings, Devine Guidry Green of Lake Charles, and Henderson Ray (Angela) Guidry of Wilmington, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Shirley Jean, Norma Smith and Donna Guidry; one brother-in-law, Floyd Johnson of Morena Valley, Calif.; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Gerald Guidry, Fred Guidry, Clarence Guidry; and his son, Don Allen Guidry.
