Reactions in Louisiana on Supreme Court leak

Sen. John Kennedy, R-Louisiana:  “Preserving the Supreme Court’s integrity is vital, and this unprecedented leak attacks its independence and legitimacy. For the sake of the court and Americans’ confidence in its independence, a thorough and robust investigation is needed to find and punish the leaker.  As I’ve said many times before, Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided and should be reversed. Everyone on either side of this issue should, however, condemn the leak and demand that we hold the leaker accountable.”

Gene Mills, president of Louisiana Family Forum: “If the court does overturn Roe, and we trust it will, the pro-life movement in Louisiana has to be ready to serve women facing unplanned pregnancy and their babies. We must be ready for this election season to stand together for babies and their mothers. We must be ready for any other court challenge, mischief and perhaps mayhem from the pro-abortion industry and their radical allies.”

Louisiana Coalition for Reproductive Freedom: “This leaked opinion is horrifying and unprecedented. It confirms our worst fears: that the Court is prepared to end the constitutional right to abortion by overturning Roe v. Wade. Let’s be clear. It is not final and this fight will never be over for us! Louisiana advocates have been preparing for this. We’re ready for this fight. This will not stop us. Last night’s news has made clear: We have reached a crisis moment for abortion access. It’s on each of us to take action. We are done waiting.”

ACLU of Louisiana Executive Director Alanah Odoms: “If the Supreme Court does indeed issue a majority opinion along the lines of the leaked draft authored by Justice Alito, this could be a shattering blow to the right to access abortion in the United States, leaving even more people struggling to get the essential health care they need. Abortion bans are systemic discrimination and racism in action, and the impact of a decision like this will be profoundly harmful, especially for the people who already face unfair obstacles to health care — particularly Black and Brown people, people with disabilities, people living in rural areas, young people, undocumented people, and those having difficulty making ends meet. Forced pregnancy, especially in a country with the highest maternal mortality rate, is a grave violation of our human rights and dignity. But let’s be clear: right now, we are not defeated. Abortion is still legal, and we will keep fighting until every person, no matter where we live, how much money we make, or what we look like, has the freedom to make our own decisions about our lives and futures. We will not stand by silently while our rights are taken away.”
