On Jan. 13, 1989, Brookney Shayeon Brooks was born to JeVanda Brooks Celestine and Charles Kerlegon Jr. in Lake Charles, La. She accepted Christ and was baptized at the age of six at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church under the leadership of The Rev. Freddie G. Brown. She saw no need to worry because of her trust in God. She always helped by sharing her infinite wisdom and knowledge. Brookney did whatever needed to be done without hesitation and she never expected anything in return. Everything she did was from her heart and with all her love. Brookney’s heart was made of pure gold! “Brookey” graduated from LaGrange High School in 2008 and was a member of the Gator Marching Band. She was a candidate of Sowela’s Information Technology Program where she received her certificate in Computer Science. Brookney worked at United Artist Movie Theater, L’Auberge Casino, and was her Grandmother’s caregiver until her Grandmother transitioned. After Hurricane Laura, Brookney relocated to Forney, Texas. Brookney was extraordinarily gifted, and she was a master of many things. She loved reading, traveling, anything related to music (especially Billie Eilish), dancing, movies (especially Marvel and DC films), her PlayStation, and telling jokes. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends and displaying her mastery culinary skills for them. “I have to make sure everyone is straight,” she would say. She was also a Chili Committee Member (LOL). She treasured every moment.

Brookney gained her wings and took flight from this world when she answered God’s call on Jan. 19, 2022. Upon her arrival to Heaven, she was greeted by her maternal grandmother, Linda Pickens Brooks; and her paternal grandparents, Charles Kerlegon Sr. and Gertie Fields. Those left to carry on her legacy of love, life, and laughter are her grandfather (who she called Daddy), Harold W. Brooks; her mother, JeVanda Brooks Celestine; her father, Charles (Chanda) Kerlegon Jr.; her stepfather, Damon Celestine; her siblings, Briah Lin “Bri” Brooks, Brandith “Bran” Celestine, Charles “C.J.” Kerlegon III, and Faith Kerlegon; her aunts, Jillian F. Brooks, Patricia Kerlegon, Connie Sterling and Courtney Kerlegon; her uncle, Patrick Kerlegon; her godfather, John N. Johnson Jr.; her godmother, Amanda Johnson; her adoring cousins, LaJuana Y. Brown, Andrea D. Johnson, Anthony H. “Pete” Dansby, and Payton A. Brown; her godchildren, Jalayah Clayton, Uriah Clayton, Austin Clayton, Ava Clayton, Arya Rose Simon, Carlee Kay LeBlanc, Ellie Kate LeBlanc, Landon Guillory, Mariah Guillory, Amiyah Singleton, D’Marques Guillory, and Rondessio Guillory; and a multitude of family, friends, and relatives. Brookney is and always will be missed by all that were fortunate to know her.
