Beauregard overwhelmingly approves tax renewal

Voters in Beauregard Parish overwhelmingly supported the renewal of a tax to support public schools throughout the parish, according to unofficial results from the Secretary of State’s office.

With 73 percent approval, or 1,141 votes out of a total 1,559, voters passed the 9.25 mil tax renewal on Saturday for another 10 years.

The tax is expected to collect about $2.6 million each year through 2031, and reflected an increase of .48 mills over the previous millage of 8.77 mills approved by voters in 2011.

The tax is to be used for the purpose of maintaining and operating schools within Beauregard Parish, to include the acquisition and maintenance of text books and instructional aids.

According to unofficial numbers from the Secretary of State’s office, only 6.8 percent of registered voters in
Beauregard Parish cast their vote on Saturday.
