BENTON (AP) — The charge has been reduced from first-degree murder to second-degree murder against Catherine Lowe, a Bossier Parish woman who was arrested earlier this year in connection with the beating death of her 5-year-old step-daughter.
Lowe, of Elm Grove, pleaded not guilty to the charge Tuesday.
The reduction in the charge means she would not face a possible death sentence if convicted. Second-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence.
Authorities say 5-year-old Celeste Lowe died after a severe beating last January.
