More hands needed to rebuild Millennium Park

Southwest Louisiana residents are still needed to help rebuild Millennium Park, an organizer of the effort said.

Of the 3,000 to 4,000 volunteers needed, about 370 are signed up for the new 20,000-square-foot park, said Lydia Aboagye, a volunteer committee co-chairwoman.

The build is a 10-day project consisting of three shifts per day, said Kay Barnett, the rebuilding committee chairwoman. The goal is to have 200 volunteers each shift.

Construction will take place Oct. 26-30 and Nov. 2-6.

“We are encouraging everyone to come out and help,” Aboagye said. “There is something for everyone to do — a job for skilled and unskilled.”

Volunteers are needed to distribute food, hand out necessary tools, assist in the day care service provided, use power tools, secure components into place, make material runs, show volunteers to construction sites and various other jobs, she said.

Barnett said children ages 10-13 can work alongside their parents.

The rebuild is short on volunteers for Wednesday through Friday of the first week, Aboagye said. Retired residents and people with a day off or working shift work are encouraged to come out and lend a hand.

“This is a great project to get involved in,” Aboagye said. “This park means a lot to the community. It’s a wonderful facility, it’s fun and it gives people a chance to meet others in the community. It gives a sense of accomplishment when the project is done, and it’s great to be able to see the final product.”

Barnett said the committee has raised 75 percent to 80 percent of the $350,000 needed for the rebuild.

“We are getting closer to reaching our goal, and we have a number of companies that are considering donations,” she said. “If all those come through, then hopefully we will actually surpass our goal.”

More than 3,000 volunteers helped build the original park, which was destroyed by arson in January of this year.
