Suspect indicted in July death of Beaumont officer

BEAUMONT, Texas — A Southeast Texas man has been indicted over the death of a police officer whose patrol car was struck during a chase.

A Jefferson County grand jury Thursday indicted 30-year-old John Wesley Nero of Beaumont on a capital murder charge. KFDM-TV eports grand jurors also indicted Nero on a charge of possession of child pornography.

The July 8 accident near Ivanhoe killed Beaumont Officer Bryan Hebert.

Nero’s mother and his grandmother told police that he assaulted them and fled after they caught him looking at child pornography.

Investigators say Nero was driving an SUV that deliberately struck Hebert’s patrol car while the officer was trying to put down road spikes to stop the suspect. The SUV hit the patrol car head-on, pushing it into the officer.
