A 18-year-old Lake Charles woman has been charged with band fraud and theft after allegedly stealing from an elderly family member, authorities said.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Ashley Bazinet said Lexy S. Fontenot, 2187 E. Gauthier Road Lot 318, was arrested Monday after a two-month investigation.

“On Nov. 6, deputies received a complaint from an elderly woman regarding several personal checks that had been stolen from her home,” Bazinet said Thursday in a news release. “Once the victim realized the checks had been stolen, she contacted her bank and discovered over $300 worth of her checks had been written and cashed at a local bank.”

Bazinet said detectives discovered Fontenot had stolen the checks from the victim’s home, forged the victim’s signature and cashed them.

Judge Ron Ware set Fontenot’s bond at $2,000.
