A Lake Charles couple is in jail after deputies found two young children wandering the street while the couple slept in their home, authorities said.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kim Myers said 30-year-old Brent J. Nelson and 25-year-old Carrie D. Hoffpauir, both of 7621 Snapper Lane, were arrested on Sunday.

“At approximately 10:30 a.m., deputies were dispatched to Snapper Lane after receiving a report of a 3 year old and a 4 year old wearing diapers walking down the street alone,” Myers said Monday in a news release. “The investigation revealed while the two children were walking down the street, Nelson and Hoffpauir were sleeping and were still asleep when deputies arrived at the home.

“During further investigation, deputies discovered the two children were living under extremely foul living conditions, which included food, clothes and dishes with mildew and a strong odor of stagnant food.”

Nelson and Hoffpauir were charged with two counts of cruelty to a juvenile and two counts of child desertion.

Myers said the children were removed from the home and placed with family members.

Bonds for Nelson and Hoffpauir are pending.

Sr. Cpl. Lance Melendy and Deputy Randall Ravia were the arresting deputies.
