10-year-old drowns in Bayou Lafourche

NAPOLEONVILLE (AP) — The Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office says a 10-year-old boy has drowned in Bayou Lafourche.

WBRZ-TV reportd the child, according to the sheriff’s office, was out fishing Friday morning with friends when he and another boy decided to jump in the water off of a footbridge.

Authorities say the victim, who could swim, came up once and showed distress before going back under. He was found about 20 feet away from where he jumped in, in six to seven feet of water.

Investigators are still talking to the boys who were at the scene to get more details about what happened, and have not released the victim’s name.
