LSU to play tournament at Minute Maid Park

There’s not much left that can raise the eyebrows for LSU baseball.

The Tigers have just about done it all as arguably the NCAA’s top baseball program over the last 25 years, including six national championships.

But this weekend will be a true rarity.

The Tigers will play their first three games in a major league ballpark in 20 years as the weekend’s games will be in Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros.

The No. 2-ranked Tigers (12-1) open the six-team tournament tonight against No. 8-ranked Houston (8-4), which shocked LSU in the Baton Rouge regional last June to eliminate the Tigers from the NCAA tournament.

The Tigers join five other teams with three games each day.

LSU will play Baylor at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and finish with Nebraska at 11 a.m. Sunday.

LSU’s only other games in a major league stadium came in 1995 when the Tigers went north for a weekend tournament at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, then the home of the Minnesota Twins. The Tigers beat Minnesota, Michigan and Florida State that year.

‘We’re very excited for this opportunity to play in a major league ball park,” LSU coach Paul Mainieri said. “We’re looking forward to having a great experience this weekend and the chance to see the tremendous LSU following in the Houston area.”

Considering the weather, LSU probably also picked a good weekend to go indoors, assuming the ballpark’s retractable roof is closed.

It will also be the first time since Mainieri’s first year, 2007, that the Tigers have left the state for a game before Southeastern Conference play began.

LSU opens conference next weekend with a three-game home series against Ole Miss.

The Tigers take a nine-game winning streak to Houston for the final run-through before conference play starts.

“Having played 13 games, we have a pretty sound idea about the strengths and weaknesses of our team,” Mainieri said. “This weekend allows us to continue to develop as we begin SEC play next week.”

LSU will go with what is expected to be its conference weekend pitching rotation, with sophomore left-hander Jared Poché (3-0, 1.96 ERA) starting tonight’s game against Houston right-hander Andrew Lantrip (3-0, 0.96).

Freshmen will start the latter two games, with Alex Lange (3-0, 2.25) going against Baylor and Jake Godfrey (2-0, 1.26) taking on Nebraska.

Mainieri, however, is still tinkering with the infield.

Concerned with the defense at third base, he moved athletic first baseman Conner Hale to third for a midweek victory against Grambling State, with Danny Zardon moving from third to first.

Mainieri said the experiment will continue this weekend, at least for tonight’s opening game.
