A DeQuincy man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Wednesday in relation to a June 2013 incident in which authorities said he tried to kill another man.

Sugar Ray Alexander, 32, pleaded guilty to possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, as well as an amended charge of aggravated battery. He was indicted on a charge of attempted second-degree murder.

Alexander was arrested in Beaumont, Texas, and returned to the Calcasieu Correctional Center in July 2013. He has been held there since on $800,000 bond, as well as a probation violation.

Judge David Ritchie sentenced Alexander to concurrent 10-year sentences on the charges, but said the sentences are to run consecutive to time he is serving for a probation violation.

According to the indictment, Alexander had drug convictions in 2007 and 2012.

Alexander has a long history of run-ins with the law in Calcasieu, dating to 1999 when he was arrested for misdemeanor sale of tobacco to minors, according to court records.

In addition to drug charges, he has faced charges of simple battery and aggravated battery.

He is serving time for violating his probation from a Jan. 17, 2012, conviction. He pleaded guilty to possession of alprazolam and hydrocodone and was sentenced to a suspended five-year prison term. He was also sentenced to six months in jail with credit for time served.(MGNonline)
