McNeese State’s softball team completed a Southland Conference sweep with a 4-1 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday, improving to 23-7 overall and 5-0 in SLC play.

McNeese picked up eight hits in the game, two coming from Lakeyn Fontenot. She also had an RBI in the game.

Meagan Bond improved to 11-2 on the season, her second win of the series. She gave up seven hits, one run and struck out seven.

McNeese’s Taylor Goree smashed a solo homer, her third of the season, in the second inning to take an early lead. The Cowgirls added three runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 4-0. Emily Vincent led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A double to left field scored Vincent.

Goree reached on an Islander error. Both Katie Roux and Goree advanced a base on an infield fly by Stacey Conley. A sacrifice fly by Taylor Schmidt scored Roux for a 3-0 Cowgirl lead then a single by Fontenot scored Goree for the 4-0 Cowgirl lead.

Texas A&M-CC avoided the shutout by scoring a run in the seventh.

McNeese will return to action Tuesday to host UL-Monroe in a single game beginning at 6 p.m., and will host Southeastern La. on the weekend in a Southland Conference series.
