A state district court judge ruled there is probable cause to proceed in a child abuse case that authorities said left an infant with a skull fracture and a broken jaw.
Chad Wayne Daigle, 32, is charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.
Judge Ron Ware lowered Daigle’s bond from $1.5 million to $350,000, in part because prosecutor Kirk Wall said the Attorney General’s Office was rejecting one the two counts of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile Daigle was originally charged with.
Ware said he considered Daigle a flight risk and a danger to the community. He said he also considered the weight of the evidence when considering whether to reduce bond.
Michael Primeaux, with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, testified that the 1-year-old child suffered a skull fracture, a broken jaw and bleeding on the brain.
Primeaux said Daigle gave authorities several different accounts of what had happened, including that his dog had struck the child with its tail.
Primeaux said Daigle eventually told authorities that he had made the child some chicken, but when the child did not wish to eat it, his feelings were hurt and he slapped the child.
Daigle said he then blacked out and when he came to, the child was whimpering, Primeaux said.
The child was admitted to a hospital on June 28, Primeaux said.
Defense attorney Heath Dorsey said he envisioned the crux of the defense’s case revolving around Daigle’s mental health.
Daigle has faced drug and battery charges in the past.

It is about time Chad Daigle gets what he deserves. He has been abusive for years but his parents always got him out of things and took up for him. They say he is crazy but he is just plain mean. That poor baby is in my prayers..
