Chick-fil-A will serve up a side of magic with its usual offerings of chicken and waffle fries when it hosts an appearance by local magician Bart Glatt on Saturday.
Glatt will share his magician’s secrets with children and will teach tricks that use household objects. The performance will be 1-5 p.m. at Chick-fil-A at 3435 Nelson Road.
“The magician’s code says that you should never reveal the secrets of your illusions, so normally doing something like this would be breaking that code. But we’re allowed to break it when it’s to educate future magicians,” Glatt said.
“Learning magic is just a really good way for the kids to do something not everyone can do. Not everyone can sing, not everyone can draw, but if they are willing to give themselves to it, they can do magic.”
Glatt said it’s important to pass on the tradition of magic — a tradition that has captivated him since he learned a trick to fulfill an assignment when he was a seventh-grader at F.K. White. He said it changed his life.
“Before that I was a really shy person, but magic has opened all kinds of doors for me and now I’ve traveled all over the world, performed for over 2 million people, including celebrities and presidents,” he said. “If you really apply yourself in magic, you’d be surprised where you can go.”
Glatt said he’ll teach the children, in a step-by-step way, tricks that can easily be reproduced at home using ordinary objects — cards, rubber bands, coins, pencils.
A representative of Chick-fil-A said the restaurant is always looking for new family-friendly ways to entertain its guests.
“At Chick-fil-A, we have our normal events like Cow Appreciation Day, where kids come to the restaurant dressed as cows and eat for free,” said Irene Vandever, marketing director. “With Bart Glatt’s magic you have something that appeals to the children but that parents are just as enthralled by.”
