Police take custody of 2 more suspects
Two men arrested in Waco, Texas, for last week’s fatal shooting on North Simmons Street have been taken into Lake Charles Police custody.
Sgt. Jeffrey Keenum said LCPD detectives and SWAT team members arrived in Waco at about 3 p.m. Monday to take custody of Devonta Deywane Orphey, 23, 611 18th St., and Devin Jalmal Holefield, 25, 5859 Tom Hebert Road.
Holefield and Orphey were arrested by the U.S. Marshal’s Office on July 20 and have been in the custody of the Mclennan County jail awaiting extradition orders.
Gary O’Brien, 31, was found dead in his home, at 409 North Simmons St., in the early morning hours of July 17.
Lt. Kevin Kirkum said three armed men wearing dark clothes and with their faces covered entered through the back door and shot O’Brien when he didn’t comply with their demand.
Two other people in the home at the time weren’t shot, Kirkum said, but one did suffer a minor injury.
Both Orphey and Holefield have been charged with first-degree murder, three counts of armed robbery and three counts of armed robbery with a firearm. Their bond was set at $1.2 million each.
Justin D. Landry, 20, 617 N. Booker St., and Jermyre J. Bowers, 18, 622 Dixy Drive, were also arrested in the case, but Landry’s arrest warrant was recalled after investigators learned false information was given about his involvement in the slaying.
Bowers has been charged with first-degree murder, three counts of armed robbery, three counts of armed robbery with a firearm and obstruction of justice. His bond has been set at $725,000.
Sixteen-year-old Justin Joseph Ned turned himself into Iowa Police on Thursday and has been brought to the Juvenile Detention Center. He has been charged with first-degree murder, three counts of armed robbery, three counts of armed robbery with a firearm. No bond has been set.
