SULPHUR — The new-look Sam Houston Broncos made the most of its extra possessions and field position advantage while rolling to a 21-0 win over Jennings Friday night in the second game of the SPOT/Billy Navarre Chevrolet Jamboree.

The Broncos scored on three of their first four possessions, with the longest drive covering 59 yards. The other two scoring drives starting in Jennings territory as the Bulldogs fumbled on a kickoff and again on their first play from scrimmage.

Sam Houston scored on the first play from scrimmage with Tavyen Grice taking a flick from quarterback Luke Yuhasz around right end for a 59-yard touchdown. The Broncos recovered a fumble at the Jennings 26 on the ensuing kickoff. Yuhasz connected with Ztevion LeBlanc for a 23-yard gain and Duhon scored on a 3-yard run on the next play,

Jennings lost another fumble on the following drive, but Sam Houston’s drive stalled at the Jennings 23. After the Broncos defense forced a three-and-out, highlighted by a Michael Harlow third-down sack.

The Broncos drove 45 yards on four plays, all runs by Duhon, the last a 5-yard touchdown run.

Sam Houston ran for 96 yards on six carries, with Duhon gaining 62 yards on eight carries.

Jennings managed one first down, an 18-yard completion from Kole Myers to Zakevian Mouton. 

Broncos head coach Chad Paulk said the Broncos played well on both sides of the ball.

“I thought coming in that we might be able to move the ball outside the box, and that worked well for us,” he said. “Jennings has a good team; they are well coached. We had a good performance tonight and are excited about it.”

Paulk said he was pleased with the play of Yuhasz, a freshman, in his first game on the big stage.

“I thought he did a great job,” Paulk said. “It is asking a lot for a young man of that age to come into this environment and compete, but he handled it well and did a great job.”

The Broncos allowed three rushing yards on four Jennings attempts.

“I’m proud of the way our defensive line held up,” Paulk said. “Our linebackers and secondary did a good job. We understand that we have to get a lot better to compete in our district, but we are proud of their performance.”

Yuhasz finished with 82 yards passing. Myers completed 3 of 5 passes for 23 yards to lead Jennings, which ran 11 plays from scrimmage compared to 25 for Sam Houston.
