If you thought this location was a wholesale-only operation only, you’re not alone.

“New people come in the door, and the first thing out of their mouths is, ‘I thought you only sold to restaurants or I would have been coming here a long time ago,” said Dan Bellard, owner. “We hear it all the time.”

While restaurants depend on Lake Charles Poultry and its same-day, five-day-a-week delivery, it is also a walk-in over-the-counter meat market with preservative-free fresh meat priced right.

Fresh and free of preservatives is a mainstay of Lake Charles Poultry.

“People deserve to get the freshest meat possible,” said Bellard. “If you don’t buy from here, and you get home with meat that smells bad or meat that’s slimy, don’t eat it. Take it back.”

Just how good are the prices at Lake Charles Poultry?

The BBQ Meat deal is made up of five pounds of pork chops, 10 pounds of leg quarters, two slabs of ribs and two pounds of sausage for $49.99.

Also popular is the #2 Meat Deal for $49.99 with 10 pounds of leg quarters, five pounds of pork chops, two pounds of smoked turkey necks, two pounds of sausage and five pounds of season blend, plus two chickens. Each is cut into eight pieces.

If you’ve got a freezer, spend more and stock it for $85. Get five pounds of each: chicken wings, turkey wings, turkey necks, pork chops, pork steaks and ground beef, plus ten pounds of leg quarters. Owner Dan Bellard said he will throw in two pounds of sausage with this deal.

Don’t want to spend $85 or $49.99?

“I have people who come in and say, Dan, I have this much money, what can I get? We’ll get ‘em fixed up.”

Dan Bellard has a good sense of humor and likes to get a laugh out of staff and customers.

Bellard’s father, Leroy Bellard, started the company 50 years ago after working for an uncle who started a poultry farm in Opelousas.

“That’s when they still used wood boxes to transport poultry,” said Dan Bellard.

Bellard still drops in from time to time.

In addition to pork and poultry (including hens, turkey, ducks and Cornish hens), Lake Charles Poultry offers beef, seafood, preservative-free frozen vegetables and rabbit, lamb, goat, hot dogs, beans, rice frying oil, barbecue sauce, fish fry, French fries and hog-head cheese.

Hog-head cheese is not a dairy cheese. It resembles a terrine, pâté or meat jelly, and is made with pork meat, onions, bell pepper, green onions, red pepper and salt.

“It’s usually eaten on crackers,” said Dan.
