Sulphur, Barbe should benefit from returning QBs

In this edition of the Three Point Stance, Rodrick Anderson and Warren Arceneaux discuss the area’s large school (Classes 3A-5A) quarterbacks.

Who is the best returning starting quarterback?

RA: Sulphur’s Morgan Clark. In his first full season as the Tors’ starter, Clark set school single-season records in passing yards (2,243) and touchdowns (21). With three receivers back in Gage Rapp, Branden Walker and Parker Matheson plus a three-star transfer tight end in Hayden Hagler, Clark stands a good chance of breaking his own records.

WA: Barbe’s Luke Richard emerged as a dual-threat star in his first season as starter, leading the Bucs to a playoff win while throwing for 2,307 yards, running for 506 and accounting for 38 total touchdowns.

Who is the most interesting new starter?

RA: Sam Houston’s Luke Yuhasz. Sam Houston started a sophomore at quarterback last year, now they will turn to a freshman. But according to head coach Chad Paulk, Yuhasz is not an average 14-year old, sighting his arm strength, athleticism and understanding of the game. He also has an impressive frame to work with at 6-3 and 190 pounds.

WA: St. Louis’s Jaleel Goodwin, who has played running back the past two years. Last year he ran for 806 yards and had six games of more than 70 yards. If he can be a competent passer, he will give the Saints a dynamic dual-threat quarterback in their new look offense.

What game has the best QB matchup?

RA: Barbe’s Luke Richard vs. Ponchatoula’s TJ Finley. Finley is a 6-6, 204-pound, four-star LSU commitment, but Richard outdueled him last year in a 56-13 Barbe win. Richard threw for 221 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for two more while Finley passed for 223 yards and two scores. This year’s game will be at Ponchatoula.

WA: Jennings’ Kole Myers vs. Washington-Marion’s MarQuez Chagois. Two senior starters will match-up in Lake Charles in a big game early in the district schedule. Jennings eked out a 21-14 win at home last year, Myers ran for more than 100 yards and a TD while Chagois threw for more than 100 and also had a TD.
