Sowela, La. College sign off on Louisiana Transfer Degree

Offers students opportunity beyond associate degree

Sowela Technical Community College and Louisiana College formalized their new “2+2” articulation agreement in a ceremonial signing on Monday.

Students who earn a Louisiana Transfer Degree — arts or science, associates of science in nursing or associates of general studies at Sowela — can transfer their credits to Louisiana College and complete their bachelor’s degree in two years.

Neil Aspinwall, chancellor of Sowela, said the “comprehensive community college” meets the needs of students who are ready to enter the workforce or who want to continue their education beyond an associate degree. Last year, the college had more than 500 students transfer to four-year universities, many of whom took advantage of partnerships like the new agreement with Louisiana College.

“Many of our students that get those technical degrees or diplomas, they want to get that higher degree because it lends to a better entry into the management position,” Aspinwall said.

The agreement also allows Sowela graduates to take bachelor’s coursework online while still entering the workforce and earning a living, Aspinwall said. For example, Sowela’s two-year ASN combined with Louisiana College’s online bachelor’s of science in nursing and master of science in nursing can potentially give nursing graduates the opportunity to work and prepare for career advancement at the same time.

“We’re giving students an opportunity to think broader about their future,” Aspinwall said.

Rick Brewer, LC president, said “opportunity, options and access” is at the heart the college’s overall commitment to the Louisiana Community and Technical College System.

“With that (Louisiana Transfer Degree), you could come to our school and really do anything,” he said. “We’re trying to develop a seamless pathway for students from any of the community colleges in the state.”

Like Sowela, Brewer said LC offers small classes and knowledgeable, qualified professors. A faith-based institution, he said the college’s values also play into its students positive experience and long-term successes.

“We bring the thoughts of God into the classroom in every academic subject,” he said. “We just believe all the treasures, all wisdom, all knowledge begins and ends there.”
