Alabama honors local students

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. —  Jackson Avery and Erin Hidalgo, both of Lake Charles, were recently recognized by The University of Alabama.

Avery was named to the spring semester’s dean’s list, which recognizes students with an academic record of 3.5.

Hidalgo was named to the spring semester president’s list, which recognizes students with an academic record of 4.0.

Angelle earns master’s degree

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Amy Angelle of Jennings was among graduates recognized recently during commencement exercises at The University of Alabama.

Angelle earned a Master of Science degree.

Kibbey earns dean’s list honor

CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Lee University congratulates Jeffery Kibbey of Iowa, La., on earning dean’s list honors during the spring 2024 semester.

Dean’s list recognition is earned by full-time, undergraduate students with a semester grade-point average between 3.7 and 4.0.

Jiang wins Merit scholarship

EVANSTON, Ill. — Julia Jiang, a student at Barbe High School, has been named the winner of the corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship award financed by the PPG Foundation Community Scholarship.

Jiang plans to study electrical engineering.

Scholarships are awarded to exceptionally able young students who are residents of selected communities where PPG maintains manufacturing or distribution operations or who are children of PPG employees.

Hoffman, Welch recognized

SHREVEPORT — Jo Hoffman and Sydney Welch, both of Lake Charles, have been named to the dean’s list for spring 2024 at Centenary College.

The honor list names all students who have achieved a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher in 12 or more semester hours taken for a letter grade during the fall semester.

WCCH Foundation gives scholarships

SULPHUR — The West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital Foundation recently awarded two local high school seniors a $1,600 scholarship to support their McNeese State University health professions degrees.

This year’s recipients were Grace Brooks of Vinton High School and Kylen Turner of Sulphur High School.

Brooks was actively involved in her education and extracurricular activities as a high school student at VHS; she was a member of BETA, Student Council, Future Farmers of America and a student-athlete. She graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Brooks will attend McNeese State University in the fall and plans to pursue a degree in nursing.

Turner graduated with a 3.78 GPA and was a member of the SHS BETA Club, Student Council and National Honor Society. He has also been very active in the community, volunteering for various efforts and organizations and coaching recreation basketball for SPAR. In the fall, he will attend McNeese State University to pursue a degree in nursing.

Harris named to dean’s list

FAYETTE, Iowa — Upper Iowa University is pleased to announce the dean’s list for the spring 2024 semester. To be honored, the undergraduate must have earned a minimum 3.50 GPA and be enrolled as a full-time student.

Among those named to the list was Nicholas Harris, a business administration major from DeRidder.

Youth Advisory Council named

BATON ROUGE — Three Southwest Louisiana students have been selected to the Louisiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council and will work together over the next year in an effort to influence the legislative process, making the state a better place for young people.

Members of the council are selected from around the state and display a strong interest in civic involvement and leadership. These students are dynamic, well-rounded individuals that go through a rigorous selection process. Three top scoring students serve from each of the six congressional districts. The remaining at-large members are the top scores from all districts combined. The members must be in grades nine through 12 and enrolled in a public, private, charter high school, or participating in a home study program.

Local students chosen are Susanna Chiruguru, LaGrange High School, Congressional District 3; Tyler Wood, Rosepine High School; Congressional District 4; and Emma Vinson,                         Westlake High School, at-large members.

Stump recognized on dean’s list

OXFORD, Ohio —  Natalie Stump of Lake Charles was named to the dean’s list at Miami University for the 2024 spring semester.

Miami University students who are ranked in the top 20 percent of undergraduate students within their division for the spring semester have been named to the list.
