Delcambre-Oberlin, Welsh-Kaplan highlight small school matchups
In this edition of the Three Point Stance, Warren Arceneaux and Rodrick Anderson discuss Week 2 games involving area small schools.
What is the most interesting game involving an area small school?
RA: Delcambre at Oberlin. Oberlin shutdown Mamou last week in a 22-0 win including a safety in the third quarter. The Tigers run defense will have to be at its best this week because the Panthers picked up over 400 yards last week against South Cameron and had three players rush for more than 100 yards in Paker Nunez, Tirney Dejean and Noah Broussard.
WA: Welsh at Kaplan. The Greyhounds responded from a poor jamboree showing with a good win vs Rayne last week. This week they hit the road to face another formidable foe in Kaplan. Welsh won last year’s game 27-18. Kaplan has been to the 3A quarterfinals once and semifinals twice in the past three seasons, return nine starters on defense and had a narrow 27-20 loss to Class 5A Acadiana last week.
What is the best in-game matchup?
RA: Hamilton RB Reggie Jackson vs. East Iberville defense. East Iberville held Slaughter Community Charter to just 62 rushing yards and 156 total yards. But Hamilton’s Reggie Jackson is coming off a career night, 312 yards, 4 TDs, in a close 34-30 lost to East Beauregard.
WA: Kinder offense vs. Iowa defense. Though Iowa lost its opener at Crowley, the defense was superb, holding the Gents scoreless for three quarters and intercepting three passes. This week that defense gets another test against the physical, ball-control Kinder offense, which rolled up 35 points in a win against Oakdale last week.
Who is a player to watch?
RA: East Beauregard RB Brycelyn Murphy. Last week, Murphy rushed for 104 yards and 2 touchdowns last week and scored the game winning touchdown on a 80-yard kickoff return. The Trojans will need similar performance from Murphy this week when they travel to Elton.
WA: Vinton RB Jordan Janice. Janice scored five touchdowns last week in Vinton’s win over Grand Lake and could be in for another big night as the Lions travel to New Iberia to face Highland Baptist, which gave up 40 points last week and allowed 47 to the Lions last season.
