DOTD: I-210 bridge work to begin by early January
Work on the Interstate 210 bridge is expected to start by early January, officials with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced Tuesday.
Lane closures will start in the first phase of work, with the eastbound and westbound bridges being reduced to one lane during the day. Both westbound lanes will be completely closed from 9 p.m.-4 a.m. Monday through Thursday.
DOTD officials said the closures are needed for the contractor to have space to work on the $35 million project. Crews will be redecking the bridge’s 930-foot main span; building inspection walkways underneath the bridge; improving the safety of barrier rails; and installing lighting.
To minimize slowdowns, a traffic advisory system will provide drivers on Interstates 10 and 210 with real-time information through message boards and flashing signs.
Motorist Assistance Patrol coverage will be increased to three units during the day and two units at night. Oversized loads will be not be allowed to travel in the construction zone.
Despite these efforts, officials said drivers should still anticipate delays during the project’s timeline. The first seven to 10 days could have longer delays as drivers adjust to the lane closures and find alternate routes.

Tammy York, public information officer for DOTD District 7, emphasized how important the resources will be for drivers during the duration of the project.
"That’s how they’re going to stay updated," she said.
Kiewit Louisiana Co., the project’s contractor, and DOTD officials met with local leaders last week to address concerns related to the project.
The company has said construction on the bridge can be done within a one-year timeline.
An official start date will be announced later this month, DOTD officials said.
