Progress on Oakdale school rebuild
<p class="indent">OBERLIN — Progress is coming along on the rebuild of Oakdale Elementary School.</p><p class="indent">Nearly 80 percent of the school — including several classrooms, the cafeteria, library, multipurpose room and the front office — were heavily damaged by a fire in May 2017.</p><p class="indent">“Seventy-five percent of the time toward completion date has elapsed and 53 percent of the work is completed,” Superintendent Michael Doucet said.</p><p class="indent">Doucet gave the School Board an update on the $6.2 million construction project during a recent board meeting.</p><p class="indent">Weather delays have hindered a lot of the deliveries and construction, he said.</p><p class="indent">Interior classroom walls are 95 percent complete and painters have started blockfilling the center block walls in most areas, he said.</p><p class="indent">The sprinkler main line is 90 percent hung and branch lines that go to the classrooms are hung.</p><p class="indent">Overhead water piping is 80 percent in place.</p><p class="indent">Workers have stud framed the upper walls in the east end and are proceeding toward the west end of the structure, he said.</p><p class="indent">Workers are currently pulling electrical branch circuit wiring.</p><p class="indent">In other progress, concrete pads have been poured in the equipment yard and kitchen hood package and roof top air conditioning units have been put in place.</p><p class="indent">Damp proofing of the cinder blocks are also continuing.</p><p class="indent">The elementary school is expected to be completed by early 2019.</p><p class="indent">In the meantime, students are attending school on separate campuses.</p><p class="indent">About 300 students in grades pre-K to first are attending school at what was left of the old campus, while those in grades 2-4 are attending classes on the middle school campus.</p>
