Former McNeese State Athletic Director Bruce Hemphill died Wednesday at his residence in Sulphur. He was 68 years old.

Hemphill was hired as the ninth A.D. in McNeese history in August of 2013 after spending 24 years in college sports administration nationwide.

Calling it his “dream job” Hemphill took over a program that he had followed while growing up in Sulphur.

“I know all about McNeese’s traditions and I used to watch football from those stands right over there,” Hemphill said when he was introduced to Cowboy fans. “To me, this is the best job I could ever want.”

During his nearly seven years at McNeese, Hemphill saw more than his share of highs and lows with the biggest accomplishments being the improved athletic facilities. Those included both the baseball and softball stadiums along with the building of the on-campus basketball arena now known as the Legacy Center.

On its opening Hemphill called it his proudest moment of his career.

“I was very sad to hear the news about Bruce’s passing,” said McNeese President Daryl Burckel. “He was a very, very good friend to me and all of the McNeese family.

“I’m thankful for his work at McNeese. He was always professional and great for our school.”

During Hemphill’s time, the McNeese football team suffered some academic issues and went through four coaches in the space of four seasons at one point. The Cowboys were put on academic probation by the NCAA and suffered a one-year postseason suspension.

His biggest hire was bringing Heath Schroyer to campus as the men’s basketball coach. Schroyer would eventually go on to replace Hemphill as athletic director.

“I was extremely heartbroken when I heard the tragic news of Bruce’s passing,” said Schroyer. “He was a good man who loved McNeese and Southwest Louisiana.

“My thoughts and prayers are with his family and his loved ones at this time.”

Health issues plagued Hemphill during his tenure at McNeese. In December 2014, he had to take a leave of absence after being diagnosed with tonsil cancer, and in July 2019, he had a cardiac episode which also caused him to miss some time.

Hemphill was a 1977 graduate of LSU where he was an Academic All-American football player.

During his time at McNeese, the Cowboys and Cowgirls won nine Southland Conference regular season championships and five SLC tournament titles.

“Bruce was very proud to be here and the Athletic Director at McNeese,” Deputy A.D. Bridget Martin said. “He would always tell people how much he loved his job.”

Over his career, Hemphill spent 30 years as an administrator in Division I athletics. He was a coach and recruiter at North Carolina State and South Carolina before moving to North Carolina in 1990.

There he spent eight years as assistant to the athletics director and the director of recruiting. He then went to the University of Wyoming where he was an associate A.D.

In 2003, Hemphill returned to North Carolina before getting the job at McNeese.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
