CLASS 2A ALL-STATE BASEBALL • SOFTBALL: Rosepine’s Frey team MVP

After helping Rosepine become one of the most dominant high school teams in the state regardless of class, Eagles catcher Ethan Frey earned the top individual honor on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 2A all-state baseball team.

Frey, an LSU signee, hit .487 with 13 home runs, 64 RBIs, 11 doubles, three triples and 28 runs. As a pitcher, Frey went 5-0 with a 0.77 ERA and two saves, striking out 43 batters in 27 innings. Frey helped the Eagles (35-2) win a second consecutive state championship, winning their last 31 games.

Notre Dame’s Corine Poncho is the softball MVP. She hit .480 with 32 home runs and 71 RBIs to lead the Pioneers (30-5) to the Division III state championship with a 6-4 win over St. Charles Catholic. Poncho powered an explosive Notre Dame offense that averaged 12 runs per game.

Coaches of the Year are Jacques Soileau of Port Barre in softball and Wayne Stein of St. Charles in baseball.

Soileau led the Red Devils to a 26-5 season and berth in the Class 2A state championship game.

Stein helped the Comets win the Division II state championship, capped with a 2-0 win over St. Thomas Aquinas in the championship game. The Comets finished 28-9, including a perfect record in District 11-2A play.

Joining Frey on the first team are Rosepine teammates Braden Trull (12-0, 0.85 ERA), Jake Smith (.461, 5 HR, 63 runs, 43 RBIs), Grant Ducote (.495, 3 HR, 47 RBI, 53 runs) and Logan Calcote (.466, 30 RBIs, 54 runs).

Kinder has a pair of first-team selections in outfielder Griffin Cooley (.422, 3 HR, 27 RBIs, 5-1, 0.94 ERA) and Landon Schmitz (8-3, 1.72 ERA, 105 Ks).

The softball team had two area selections. Freshman pitcher Briana Fontenot (19- 2) was picked after leading the Kinder Yellow Jackets to the Class 2A championship game. Rosepine junior Jenna Marler (.513) was picked as a utility player after helping the Eagles reach the state quarterfinals.
